Surfing out of control at Virginia Beach! Enforcement needed!

(May 13, 2009) – - Ocean surfing at the North End in Virginia Beach is totally out of control. The current rules allow surfing on Monday through Thursday at any time of day; and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the rules prohibit surfing between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. A leash must be used at all times.

Most, but not all, surfers completely ignore the limits on the weekends and surf any time of the day they wish. And worse, a few surf without the required leash.

On any Friday or Saturday or Sunday during the summer months you can find surfers in the water between 11 am and 4 pm and, of course, any time before and after. Surfers use the weekend days the same as they do the regular weekdays – surf any time you please.

The Civic League of the North End has requested more police patrols, but without effect. Citizens who live in the area from 82nd Street up to Fort Story have hired an off-duty police officer with powers to issue tickets to patrol the beach. The officer has had marked impact so that the swimmers can be relaxed and enjoy the ocean at least during the weekend afternoons.
