We were immediately seated in a large rear dining room where dozens of diners where already whacking away with wooden crab mallets on the butcher-paper covered tables at piles of steamed crabs. And conversation was in full bloom.
Dorianne ordered fried flounder with steamed squash and broccoli ($16.99); Jack had dueling fried crab cakes ($16.99); my wife ordered the broiled flounder with fries and slaw ($16.99); and I had Atlantic Combo Platter - fried crab cake, fried oysters, and fried shrimp with fries and slaw ($21.99).
The crab cakes were well made and contained little filler, Both flounder portions were good size, and steamed veggies perfect. Jack liked the crab cakes and said he’d come back. My combo was ‘over’ fried, but the oysters were very tasty - great flavor, but small. My wife’s broiled flounder was judged ‘excellent.’
The French fries were hard, over-fried. And the hush puppies, very tasty, were barely larger than rat droppings. Would have liked to have seen them done golf-ball size and style.
Service was outstanding despite the hustle and bustle of serving the increasingly large crowd during the dinner period.
Add drinks and the exorbitant Virginia Beach meal tax, which we’ve blogged nationally (spreading the word where we can) as being a 1st class rip-off of locals and tourists alike, and Margie&Ray’s gets a 2-star rating.
It is open for lunch, takes credit cards, has a full bar, accepts reservations, and features takeout service.
Until the restaurant’s prices drop 20-40%, the wife and I said it isn’t a place we’d return. There are too many better priced seafood restaurants closer to home.
But if you are in the Sandbridge area, you are not a connoisseur of ‘outstanding’ seafood, Margie&Ray’s is certainly worth trying. Don’t drive too far to get there! You’ll pass some really great dining opportunities at much less cost.
