Best would be to abolish property taxes collected for over-priced, under-performing government schools, shut them down, and use the state's share to pay $5,000 for each child a teacher teaches in his or her own home.

A dozen students and you'd equal pay and benefits for most Mecklenburg teachers. Teach 20 and rake in a cool $100,000--- accountable only to parents. free of burdensome bureaucracy. Can't happen? It will when the dollar collapses, only then teachers will be paid in chickens.

And, once again Robert Hurt, a nice guy I hate to pick on, displays ignorance of jobs and the economy by touting the paltry 200,000 new jobs December 2011 produced. All but 23,000 are non-manufacturing, service sector---mostly restaurant and retail, part time, low paying, and temporary.

And the unemployment, underemployment, given- up- hope, rate is not 8 or 8.5 percent but more like ONE FOURTH of the entire working age population, from the Labor Department, Bureau of Statistics.
