As a supporter of our Second Amendment rights, and a native Virginian, I have been concerned about the prospect of President Obama securing a victory in Virginia, but more importantly, winning the Hampton Roads area.
In the 2008 election cycle, the Second Congressional district of Virginia voted 51-49% in support of Barack Obama.
Since that time, President Obama has repeatedly challenged our right to “keep and bear arms” from the “fast and furious” scandal with Attorney General Eric Holder to the Obama Administration’s support for the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty (UN ATT), a treaty which would have subverted our Second Amendment freedoms.
Virginia is a state with a long standing history of gun rights.
George Mason, a Founding Father, Virginian and writer of the Virginia Constitution once stated during the Virginia Constitutional Convention “when the resolution of enslaving America was formed in Great Britain, the British Parliament was advised…to disarm the people; that it was the best and most effectual way to enslave them.”
Much like Britain trying to disarm the American people, the United Nations sought to take away our Second Amendment; however, the United States didn’t sign the treaty because Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS) and a majority of the US Senate refused to ratify the UN ATT because it would have undermined our right to “bear arms.”
Next time, the UN ATT comes up, we might not have champions of gun rights like Senator Moran, so it’s time we act to any elected official who breaks their oath to uphold the US Constitution.
This election year, Virginia is a battleground state that will determine who will serve as our next President, a reason that it’s imperative we have all supporters of the Second Amendment in the Second Congressional district volunteering and voting to bring about real change by working to get President Obama out of the White House.
So, I am urging everyone who supports the right to “bear arms” get out and get involved during this critical election, because without your assistance we will see a repeat of President Obama’s victory in Hampton Roads.
Yours in freedom!
Robert B. Melvin
