VIRGINIA BEACH – - Bill Fleming, self-employed and in the Democrat Party, is facing the biggest uphill battle of his career:  An run for the 8th District Senate seat against Jeffrey McWaters,  elected last weekend as the GOP standard bearer.

Fleming has only until January 12 to marshal a campaign against overwhelming odds of money and organization.  McWaters is still officially reporting about $165,000 in campaign funds received in his campaign against fellow GOPer, Councilwoman Rosemary Wilson.

However, insiders have speculated that when the final tally is in, it would run $500,000 to $800,000 from his special interest friends among a political machine that Mayor Will Sessoms’ hardcore of supporters are trying to build around him.

In an appearance before the Saturday Democrat breakfast of about 65 – 23 Princess Anne High School students, Fleming admitted his entry was a last minute move as he denied being ‘extreme,’ but admitted being an otherwise conservative candidate.

“This isn’t going to be a typical campaign.  We not going to spend a lot of money on yard signs because the Republicans have a reputation of pulling them down.

“We don’t like car stickers either  because my wife had one on her car and it was keyed (in protest).”

His only other political involvement has been through his eldest son, he said, who worked in Commissioner of the Revenue Phil Kellam’s and Obama’s campaigns.

He promised he wouldn’t sling political mud or do anything to embarrass his opponent.

McWaters nomination was about a 2-1 win over Wilson, but it left a lot of Republicans disillusioned.  He was not universally loved.

Numerous sources have said the election was not so much an endorsement McWaters as it was a rejection of Wilson because of his past voting record favoring taxes and fees during her terms on council.

Was her defeat the beginning of voters’ retaliation against tax and spend politicians?  if not the sole defeating factor, it was played a major role in her defeat.  Certainly citizen activists will continue to built on the discontent in an effort to unseat all incumbents from local elections to next year’s off-term Congressional elections.

2nd District Democrat Rep. Glenn Nye is in pretty good standing in his district, joining the Blue Dog national conservative Democrat group in  Congress and voting generally along district, rather than Democrat lines.

Although numerous Republicans have announced to oppose Nye, like former Democrat Congressman Owen Pickett, who survived in the primarily Republican 2nd District for 16 years with increasingly larger vote margins, Nye has not upset the GOP rank-and-file with his votes, many of whom contend that Nye, with his conservative voting record, will be hard to Republicans to unseat.
“At times, he seems more Republican than some of our own people,” said one GOPer who says he’ll support Nye if he continues his conservative  voting record.

  • Ben Krause says:

How can Glenn Nye be conservative as he has voted in favor of abortions?

  • Democrat Rep. Glenn Nye could really help shore-up his support by doing some radio spots in support of Bill Fleming.

Bill Fleming is a Veteran, an accomplished business man and exactly the sort of voice we need in Richmond, who will stand-up against the corrupt, multinationals who have the Republicans in their vest pocket.

If you want real job development that will be right here, instead of more jobs shipped to China, then Vote for Bill Fleming on January 12, 2010. Start Virginia back on the road to prosperity, in 2010.

  • Martin Young says:

Mr. Krause should be smart enough to know that abortion is a medical procedure, a legal one, and not a political issue. If you start arguing this, you will want to start regulating plastic surgery, breast enhancement, etc. You should be a Libertarian – let each individual live their own lives, be individually responsible for their decisions, and make medical decisions with advice and consent of professional medical staff not political hacks who want to impose their decisions on what is right and wrong on the lives of others. If you don’t want to have an abortion, Mr. Krause, don’t get one, but don’t try to tell everyone else what to do: You sound like a typical Republican!

  • Dave Donis says:

Mr. Young, abortion is a political issue. A big one. It also involves an issue of life and death. People have very strong feelings on the subject. I would say that Mr. Krause has every right to question Mr. Nye’s credibility here. He certainly wasn’t telling anyone what to do. It isn’t typically “Republican”. It certainly is typical for someone opposed to abortion. Please argue the issue on the merits instead of questioning someone’s intelligence because they have an opinion different than your own. You might answer how a conservative might still vote for Nye, although Nye favors the status quo.
