(April 6, 2012) - - A Oceana FA-18 jet fighter with 2-crewmen aboard crashed into the Mayfair Mews senior apartment complex 2 blocks south of Laskin Road off Birdneck at 12:05 p.m. Friday.

Two crew members ejected safely with only minor injuries.  Five others also reported minor injuries, but remarkably as of late Friday, no fatalities were known.

The crash destroyed 5 4-apartment buildings as the jet burst into fuel-fed 4-alarm fire.  A shelter for residents was opened in Birdneck Elementary School.

City and Navy fire fighting equipment had the bulk of the flames knocked down within 90 minutes of the crash.

Most roadways leading into and out of the area were quickly closed to traffic.

Oceana has been heavily involved in flying low-level training exercises for a couple weeks since Fentress Field has been closed for maintenance.
