VIRGINIA BEACH - - Independent 2nd District Congressional candidate Kenny Golden says the major issues between him and the other candidates is experience, leadership, and CASH.
Golden, former GOP city chairman, dropped out of the Republican Party over party establishment interference in what, at one time, was a 7-person primary race.
The national party 'stacked' the deck against him and the other 6 candidates by funding and providing massive campaign support and training to primary winner, Scott Rigell. Golden withdrew from the race and the party.
In the June 8 primary Rigell won with overwhelming funding, more than $1.2M, and took almost 40% of the vote. The other five candidates shared the remaining 60%, but the 2nd highest, Ben Loyola only polled 24%.
At his campaign headquarters opening Thursday, Golden said, "We laying the groundwork for an independent candidacy something we haven't had in the 2nd district in many, many years. With 42% of people in this country listing themselves as independents … largest number in recent history - - gives me a good opportunity."
He said he estimates the Democrat national establishment will help freshman incumbent Glenn Nye raise about $6M to hold onto the seat.
He says Rigell will use about $4M. Golden says that with the national voter discontent trend toward establishment party candidates, he should be able to split the vote and win the seat. He said he thinks his campaign by hard work can overcome the massive spending, which is seen by many as a negative.
Golden told a press conference: "I'm in this race because I'm concerned for our country. I do not believe we can continue down the path that we are on to spend and spend and spend.
"Unless something has changed in the last couple days, there was no candidate with a plan who is running in this district. I'm calling for taking a 2% cut from each one of the departments. I'm calling for auditing the Department of Defense and Homeland Security. Obama recently told his secretaries that he wanted 5% cut.
"No country has ever spent its way out of a bad situation. And we're no different."
On moving 2 aircraft carriers to FL.
Golden has already taken an active role in fighting to keep the Navy from moving any aircraft carriers to Mayport, FL - that will cost Tidewater $1.2M a day in salaries alone if 2 carriers leave here.
Neither Nye nor Rigell have the authority of intellect or experience to effectively fight for the carriers. "The car dealer doesn't understand why we're fighting so much for it and he never has. (Rigell is owner of Freedom Auto car dealerships)>
"In fact in one of the debates, he (Rigell) said, 'well if it makes sense strategically , then I'd say OK.' You know if you can't see that it doesn't make sense strategically, then there's something wrong with you because these carriers are protected in here.
"They're much more vulnerable to attack and disabling in Mayport."
On other issues, Golden opposes abortion, but doesn't believe the government has the right to control it; favors an Navy off-sight landing field (OLF) on the Eastern Shore; supports 'don't-ask-don't-tell' policy for gay in the military, but believes it can be improved; has signed a 'no-tax' pledge and will oppose a value-added tax.
