CHESAPEAKE - - A new $40 MILLION military prison facility is slated to be built by the U.S. Department of Defense in the Northwest area of Chesapeake.

The prison will have at least 400 cells.

The new facility will house members of all branches of the military services who have been charged with major or minor offenses and are awaiting court martial hearings.

It will replace the existing Camp Allen brig at the Norfolk Naval base which alone has a capacity to hold about 1,000 inmates, Navy and Marine only.

The new prison will be used by the Army, Navy Marines and Air Force, many from outside regional military bases.

The Northwest Navy Support Activity, Norfolk Annex houses a communication network for the Navy.

The base has its' own sewage treatment plant with an outflow emptying into the Northwest River near the intake for Chesapeake's water treatment plant.

The new prison may double the gallons of effluent and and suspended solids discharged into the waterway.
